Jesse Stone (Charlie Calhoun)

Jesse Stone, also known as Charlie Calhoun, was a famous musician and songwriter in the 1900’s. Stone was born in Kansas. By 1927, Stone had formed a group called the Blue Serenaders and had his first record recorded. In the mid 1930’s, Stone worked with Duke Ellington to get his orchestra booked at a venue called the Cotton Club. For some years after that, Stone worked as a bandleader at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York. In the 1940’s, Stone and his friend Herb Abramson joined National Records and two years after that, they both ended up moving over to Atlantic Records. Later in his life, Stone moved to Chicago to head Randy Records, but later ended up moving to New York and then ultimately settling in Florida. He passed away in Altamonte Springs, FL in 1999.
